His Coming and His Prayer

Among many other things, the Lord’s Prayer gives us clear reasons for Jesus’ birth.  Consider each line of this prayer.

  • Let Your name be holy – He came to earth to reveal the Father’s name and nature. (John 17:6 & 26)
  • Let Your kingdom come – Christmas happened so Jesus could proclaim and demonstrate the kingdom of God. (Matt 4:17, Luke 11:20)
  • Let Your will be done – When Jesus came into the world, He said He came to do the Father’s will (Heb 10:5-7)
  • Give us this day our daily bread – As the bread who came down from Heaven, He offers us Himself! (John 6:35)
  • Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors – He was named “Jesus” because He is the One who saves people from their sin. (Matt 1:21)
  • Lead us not into temptation – Over and over, Jesus told people to follow Him.  He leads best.  (Matt 4:19, John 21:19)
  • Deliver us from the evil one – Jesus came into the world to destroy the works of the devil.  (1 John 3:8b)

So, as we celebrate the incarnation, let’s not forget Jesus’ clear instructions in prayer.

Of course, you can find out much more about how to use the Lord’s Prayer as a pattern for your own personal prayer by seeing Living Prayer: the Lord’s Prayer Alive in You.
